SEO Best Practice Gallery
Up one levelLearn SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by looking at what other companies are up to. These mainly UK examples illustrate a range of techniques we cover in the E-consultancy Search Engine Optimisation Best Practice Guide. Its easier to cover on-page optimisation and internal linking than external link-building, so I've concentrated on those. Here are 5 for starters.

SEO Example case - Mercedes
This case was presented by Mark Everest, E-commerce Manager, Mercedes-Benz Car Group at the Revolution Search Marketing Conference, April 2007. It shows the use of a directory on a separate sub-domain that specifically targets product specific search phrases e.g. "Merc ML" which may not be well catered for on the main site. Additional content is created for each search phrase in the database.
Backlinking & Blog SEO example - Zopa

SEO internal linking footer example
Another internal link-building example for SEO similar to the Direct Line one where internal links with relevant product anchor text are created.
Paying for news content for SEO
Paying for links or press releases to assist with SEO is relatively well known. This post describes the increasingly popular approach of paying for development of topical news content by destination sites who are NON-PUBLISHERS (well, not traditionally anyway). Results from search engine optimisation can always be increased by increasing the diversity and freshness of content on a site if it is unique. It should also help add value for users. Availability of internal resources will often limit this, so I was interested to hear recently about the success of Direct News, who have assembled a team of specialist journalists to help develop regular content for a monthly fee. This example is based on the London Stock Exchange, who are one of their clients.
Using UGC / Web 2.0 for SEO
Web 2.0 is hot at the moment, but how can it be used for SEO other than through external links through Digg, Delicious, etc. This is an example from a travel company, but could equally be a retailer.
SEO World Championships - keywords in domain name
The latest SEO competition kicked off in Jan 2007 targeting the keyphrase "globalwarming awareness2007". What can we learn - not sure whether this is "best practice", but entrants have to abide by the Google Webmaster guidelines - you can bet they are pushing them pretty close.
SEO Best Practice - easyCar - On Page optimisation
SEO Best Practice - On Page optimisation - this example shows a high density for the target keyphrase.
SEO Best Practice - bigmouthmedia - external link building
SEO Best Practice - Bigmouthmedia. For ultracompetitive phrases like "Search Engine Optimisation" and "Search Engine Marketing" BMM ranks top in Google UK / All the Web option. You can only get there by external links and pushing the limits - BMM was briefly dropped then reinstated by Google last year.

Internal linking using Sitemaps - Direct Line - They use multiple site maps for different products and target a wide range of keyphrases on each site map implying generation of a lot of extra content for SEO purposes.

I've set it up to be quick, but you can't add true hyperlinks - just text.
